Our purpose in creating the original exhibit at Gallier Hall was to highlight some of the physical
changes that have occurred in the city of New Orleans since 1950 and to illustrate how capital
projects sponsored by the municipal government have spurred those changes. The exhibit examines
each of the four decades from the 1950s through the 1980s, focusing on a major project from each
era. It also touches on several additional projects that have had profound impact on the Crescent
City over the past forty years.
Building New Orleans: The Fifties (The Civic Center)
Mayor Marc H. Morial presented his
1997 budget to the City Council at Gallier Hall on
October 16, 1996. The City Archives, Louisiana Division, New Orleans Public Library mounted a
special exhibit onsite for the occasion. This is an online, condensed version of that exhibit.
