In 1956, the New Orleans municipal government
employed 6,291 workers. The budget of expenditures
for that year totalled $26.2 million. By 1996, the number
of employees had actually declined to 6,120, but the budget
of expenditures had swelled to $408.5 million.The two charts shown below (prepared by Gail Cassagne of the NOPL Office of Strategic Planning and Major Campaigns) provide a graphical comparison of budgeted municipal expenditures in 1956 and 1996.
