Building New Orleans: The Canal Streetcar Project
Tourism is one of New Orleans' most important industries and the St. Charles Streetcar has long
been one of the city's most popular attractions. In recent years the new Riverfront Streetcar line
has proven to be very popular for tourists traveling between the area's several visitor destinations.
Plans to return streetcars to Canal Street are designed both to tap into the tourist market and to
bring tourist back to the center of the CBD's shopping district.
The 1992 city capital budget recorded $16.8 million in federal funds and $4.2 million in Regional
Transit Authority funds for the Canal Street Corridor Rail Project.
