HONORABLE MENTION

The Killing Got To Stop
by Dorothy LaCour of New Orleans, LA

You laugh, sing, and smile one day
Before you know it, no one wants to play.
Living in the projects, I have seen lots of killing,
Hoping one day they would all be chilling.
Some guys get killed over a dime
Does this have to happen all the time?
Some get killed over the way they dress,
Thinking what they are doing is a success.
Some sold drugs to make lots of money,
They must realize the killing isn't funny.
Having a visit or phone call saying your son is dead
There can be retaliation coming ahead.
Each Mother has to bury her son,
As you can see, the system has won.
Some people take matters into their own hands,
Hoping they could stop the killing from happening again.
There won't be no young men to follow this generation,
The killing of each other puts it in a bad situation.
Some afraid to go out and have fun,
Hearing shots, they are afraid to run.
The guys are young men killing each other,
Why can't they show love for one another?
Having special prayers for one another,
Can the killing stop of each other?
As time goes by and the day gets longer,
I pray that all will become much stronger.
To all young men who think so or not,
This killing is hurting us,
THE KILLING GOT TO STOP!
