The correspondence was filed by the Police Department under the name of the state enquiring about a fugitive or the state to which NOPD was directing its own enquiry. Folders are arranged alphabetically by the state and in a rough chronological order therein. Correspondence with Canada, Mexico and Uruguay follows U.S. correspondence.
Correspondence--including telegraphs and radiograms--to and from the New Orleans Police Department regarding fugitives from other police jurisdictions, escapees from correctional institutions, missing persons, etc. Occasionally, mug shots, finger print cards, and "wanted" flyers are included. The bulk of correspondence, naturally, is with states nearest to Louisiana (Texas and Mississippi, for example). Correspondence from Washington, D.C. includes several letters signed by J. Edgar Hoover.
