The Criminal Sheriff of Orleans Parish is the administrator of the Orleans Parish Prison.

The record book comprises receipts for Orleans Parish prisoners turned over by the Sheriff to the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Its pages are printed forms, some of which have been filled with entries while others have been pasted over with loose receipt forms. The data recorded includes: date of transfer of prisoners and each prisoner's name, date of sentencing, prisoner number, section of Criminal District Court where sentencing took place, crime, and length of sentence (some data elements were discontinued later in the book). Also included are several receipts for transfer of insane persons to the Louisiana State Hospital in Jackson.
