August 1999

Cornelius Durkee came down to New Orleans from Saratoga Springs, New York in 1901 for the Mardi Gras. While in town he visited local cemeteries and landmarks, toured the city's streets, and took part in both the Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras festivities. B ack in New York, he or his descendants gave photographs from his New Orleans visit to Skidmore College. Those images later made their way into the hands of the Saratoga County historian who donated them to the city of New Orleans in 1976. They have finall y found a home in the Louisiana Photograph Collection.

One of our volunteers recently scanned the seventy Durkee photographs, making it possible for us to present the complete collection online. We're quite proud of the accomplishment and have decided to feature a portion of the Durkee Collection in this mont h's image gallery. We've included a link to the complete collection description at the bottom of this page, following the thumbnails.

Click on the thumbnail images below for a larger version of the photograph and a brief description of what it shows.
