| The Crescent City Business
Directory for 1858-59 with fine engravings of the most conspicuous public
buildings, as well as a map of the city and a general compilation of the
year's commercial business is the source for this month's
Gallery. The "fine engravings" actually are lithographs produced by J. T.
Hammond, an engraver and lithographer who had his office at 9 Camp Street
in 1858. In addition to the eight works by Hammond we also include the
engravings that accompany three advertisements appearing in the
Directory. Together, these eleven images provide us with an idea of
the appearance of New Orleans in 1858.
