The photograph was taken in or near the shopping center at the corner of South Claiborne and Washington Avenues during picketing of the center by members of the New Orleans Consumers League. Rev. Alexander and five others were arrested and booked for disturbing the peace and obstructing a public passage. The six were picketing stores in the shopping center in protest of disciminatory hiring practices.
