"The Madonna and Child" was painted by Madame Lo-Chang, daughter of Dr. Kang Yu-Wei, the great scholar and reformer who assisted the emperor in 1898 in his 100 days of reform. Madame Lo-Chang, a devout Buddhist, lives in Peking and is active in many good works. It is not difficult for a Chinese artist trained in the Buddhist tradition to paint a Madonna; for many of the thoughts connected with the Madonna are associated with the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.
Original painting lent by Dr. William B. Pettus.
