The Gentilly Woods subdivision was developed in the early 1950s by Gentilly Homes, Inc., a corporation founded by W.H. Crawford and Associates. Work began in early 1951, with $15,000,000 earmarked for the construction of 1423 homes designed to meet the booming post-war housing market. At the time, the project was described as "the largest in the history of New Orleans."
The Louisiana Division holds a small promotional brochure put out by Gentilly Homes, Inc. to display the Crawford Homes models to potential buyers. This month's Gallery presents the brochure in full.
Gentilly Woods was hard hit by Hurricane Katrina. Flood waters reached as high as 10 feet in the area. Yet homeowners are beginning to rebuild. In the Louisiana Division, we have had a number of requests from residents of Gentilly Woods for blueprints of their homes. In almost every case, the plans are not available in the City Archives. However, we do have this "Planbook," which provides a drawing of the home and a general floorplan. We hope these images will be of some use to the residents of Gentilly Woods as they begin to return and rebuild.
