Images of the Month Gallery
In keeping with our 2007 Images of the Month theme of "a century ago," this month's gallery reproduces pages from the Annual Report of Board of Commissioners of the Police Department and the Inspector of Police Force of the City of New Orleans For the Year 1907. It also puts names to some of the faces of individuals mentioned in the report by reproducing photographs (taken a few years earlier) from the NOPD's 1900 "yearbook." And it includes several "Bertillon cards" for people arrested in 1907, from a small series of records of the Bureau of Identification.
Today, the NOPD is working hard to rebuild after Katrina devastated its ranks and destroyed its facilities, equipment, records and -- to a degree -- its morale. The modern police force faces vastly different challenges than those that confronted the force of 1907, but our current Superintendent of Police would no doubt echo today the statement made by the Inspector of Police a century before, who wrote:
In submitting my report for the year 1907, I would state that the work of the Police Department has been arduous, but that the members of the Uniform Rank and the Detectives were active and faithful in the performance of their duties.
