Early in the morning of September 26, 1956. a fire killed one man and caused $50,000 in damage to several rooming houses, a barber shop, and the Gin Mill bar in the 300 block of North Rampart Street. Seventy-five firemen from fifteen NOFD units fought the blaze. Fire officials observed that were it not for thick firewalls separating the individual buildings, an entire block of the Vieux Carre might well have been lost.
