Seventy-five firemen fought the fire that gutted 2625 Canal Street during the afternoon of December 22, 1973. The two-story building at that address housed Finest Foods, Inc., owner of Mrs. Drake's Sandwiches and the nearby A&G Cafeteria. Firefighters had to practically destroy the building in order to reach the stubborn fire deep inside. Heavy black smoke impeded their progress but, fortunately, no one was injured. Earlier that day, however, three civilians died in an apartment hotel fire on Baronne Street near Poydras.|
