Poydras and Carondelet

"... of the Grecian Doric order, the details of which are copied from the Temple of Theseus, at Athens. The facade is in imitation of the first order of Greek Temples, being in the antae the most simple and beautiful arrangement. From the roof and over the pronaos of the temple, rises a large octangular obelisk, resting on a lofty pedestal of the Egyptian order of architecture, combining a novel grandeur and beauty to be seen in no other similar structure in the union. The whole presents bold and original taste in design. The height of the steeple is 170 feet from the side walk. This edifice was erected in the years 1836-7, by Messrs. Dakin & Dakin, architects, at an expense of $50,000. The officiating minister is the Rev. Mr. Pitts."
