Mary-Kate Tews (1937-2008) came to New Orleans in the early 1970s after earning degrees in drama from the University of Wisconsin. She served as the first executive director of the New Orleans Council of the Arts for Children and later directed cultural programs for the New Orleans Recreation Department. Her varied career as an artist, educator, planner, manager, and consultant spanned a period of thirty plus years, ending with her 2005 departure (with her husband, Tom, a former principal at Benjamin Franklin High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) for a retirement community in Maryland.

Of particular interest are Mrs. Tews' position as a planner and manager with the Louisiana World Exposition and her work in planning for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. With the LWE, which ran the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, she held key roles with the event's varied arts endeavors, including the International Water Sculpture Competition, the Louisiana Folklife Center, and the Artworks '84 presentation of the works of Louisiana artists. Mrs. Tews also played a key role in the LWE's procurement of uniforms for its workforce. She was later able to use her experiences with the Fair organization to write her 1986 masters thesis (in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of New Orleans): "The evolving cityscape : socio-economic impacts of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition." Mrs. Tews planned to use her Atlanta experiences as the basis for her PhD dissertation but that work was interrupted by her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2007. She lost her battle with that disease on July 1, 2008.

The papers are arranged in the following series:

  • General--correspondence and subject files relating to Mrs. Tews' personal and family life as well as to her career before and after her employment with the Louisiana World Exposition

  • Journals--handwritten entries on pages of varied notebook types/sizes, with pasted-in and/or loose letters, clippings, post cards, brochures, tickets, etc. Many of these volumes deal with Mrs. Tews' Atlantic/Olympics activities or with trips outside the U.S. Several journals are more personal in nature.

  • Louisiana World Exposition--correspondence, reading files, and subject files (including some financial records) relating directly to Mrs. Tews' activities and responsibilities with the LWE organization along with other records and documents dealing with more general LWE matters.

  • Louisiana World Exposition Loose Materials--there were a considerable number of items, some relating to LWE financial affairs, found loose in the boxes that the Tews used to deliver/ship the papers to the Library. We sorted and filed those items into more or less generic subject headings. As such, they tend to deal more with the LWE's overall activities rather than with the art-related concerns that were more directly in Mrs. Tews' realm.

  • Oversize--material that would have been filed with one of the other series except for its large format.

  • Souvenirs

  • Atlanta--one box containing documents, clippings, etc. collected by Mrs. Tews while she was working on the Atlanta Olympics. Little or none of these materials appear to be her own work product, hence we have not itemized them in an inventory. Also included are a number of pins and other souvenirs from the 1996 games.
