By the early 20th Century, the New Orleans port at the mouth of the Mississippi River continued as the largest southern port in the United States. These images of the river -- docks lined with steamboats, passengers waiting to board, wharfs stacked with bales of cotton and other cargo -- bear witness to the bustling atmosphere of the New Orleans port city culture.
