Grauman Marks was born in Louisville, Ky. He graduated from the University of Kentucky and, in 1926, received a law degree from Harvard University. The following year, he moved to Cincinnati, where he served first as the Hamilton County Assistant Prosecutor and then entered private practice. Marks was also an amateur photographer, an afficianado of New Orleans jazz and a frequent visitor to New Orleans.
The photographs were donated to the Louisiana Division in two separate deposits, many years apart. The first deposit of 267 images is undocumented, but may have been the gift of the photographer himself. The second deposit of 79 additional images was the gift of William E. "Bill" Smith, Editor Emeritus of CODA Magazine in 2010; these images were provided to CODA by Marks himself in 1969.
The photographs are arranged into several series, based on the separate deposits, and within each series, numerically by numbers assigned by the processors:
The Louisiana State Museum, Tulane University's Hogan Jazz Archive, Preservation Hall, and the Cincinnati Museum Center also hold photographs by Grauman Marks. The Cincinnati Museum Center also holds the Grauman Marks Papers, relating primarily to his professional career in Ohio.
