|REBUILD New Orleans Public LIbrary|
October 13, 2007
The Alvar Branch had a second re-opening event on October 13, when Capital One sponsored “Jump, Jive, and Join In,” a celebration among Bywater residents of their renovated library and its recently landscaped pocket park. The Charmaine Neville Band and the NOCCA Jazz Band performed. Local food and drink included barbeque from The Joint, beer and wine from Bacchanal, and for dessert, Hubig’s Pies. Kids enjoyed the music as well as storytelling, balloons, and crafts.
The Alvar branch interior had been ruined by post-Katrina flooding and was renovated in a four-month “extreme makeover” organized by Library Journal in spring 2006. Donors from across America helped fund the renovation; publishers and vendors provided the books, CDs, and furniture. Major donors are recognized on a new plaque unveiled on October 13.
